At 63, Helen Mirren should be sitting at home tending to her garden and grandchildren. This Academy Award winning actress is seen showing off her wonderful body while on a vacation in Puglia, on the southern tip of Italy, with her film director husband Taylor Hackford.

Looking at the picture and Helen’s enviable curves, it seems hard to believe that this is the same actress whose portrayal of the Queen won her an Oscar. Yet this was no retouched studio shot, with the only work to transform her toned body having been carried out during gruelling hours in the gym.

She bought a castle in the neighbourhood to celebrate her 2007 Academy Award for Best Actress.

To celebrate her 2007 Academy Award for Best Actress, she bought a 500-year-old building and grounds near Lecce and immediately drew up big plans for the estate with refurbishment work starting last summer. The property was uninhabitable, with tumbledown walls and a driveway that was little more than a dirt track. Her new Italian home is surrounded by high fortified walls and has a mature vineyard within its grounds. The Mediterranean can be seen half a mile away.

Dame Helen also owns an enormous home in California and a property by the Thames in Wapping, East London.

I’d guess that the majority of Hollywood stars, especially ones who have won an Academy Award would be shocked if they were to visit reclusive Julie Christie’s home in Powys, Wales, or for that matter her simple “room” in London’s east end where she gets about town by bus.

The British actress, nominated for an Oscar in 2008 for her role as a woman with Alzheimer’s disease, keeps out of the usual celebrity circus, having always preferred to do things her way.

Her sheep breeding home in Wales, which she has owned since the 1970’s, with it’s corrugated roof and ramshackle doors, is a far cry from the extravagance and decadent lifestyle of Hollywood.

On a visit to her farm in an attempt persuade Julie to do a reprise of their famous movie, Don’t Look Now, Donald Sutherland was so cold he slept in his overcoat., and he came away amazed at finding a yard filled with chickens, ducks and cats.

The main problem, as far as Sutherland was concerned, was not the absence of toilet paper - Julie rips up newspapers for use instead - didn’t put him off, it was the lack of central heating. Julie wore heavy sweaters and huddled next to the Aga for warmth, then went to bed as soon as night fell to avoid the diving temperature.

Donald high-tailed it back into town after just one night: “It was so cold in that house that I had to sleep in all my clothes including my overcoat, and I still wasn’t warm.”

Julie rents out her farm in Powys, Wales, and stays instead in one of the barns on her land, adapted into a home. “I always hang my washing up outside, or even on a pulley thing,” she volunteers. “It is a complete waste of energy to use dryers.”

No dryers and using torn up newspaper for toilet paper - this is going too far. She may be one of favorite mature women, but it sounds like the rumors of her being eccentric and reclusive to the point of being weird just might be true!

It’s a misconception that beautiful Julie Christie is one of the “all natural” Hollywood beauties foregoing the surgeon’s knife in favor of a natural aging process.

However, ten years ago she astonished fans when she admitted she’d had a face-lift.

She is quoted as saying: “In America, people who are older than you appear to be younger,” she said. “It is really undermining. You know they are older than you, yet you look like their mother.”

“There is such an emphasis on looks. I know what I look like – then I look in the mirror and don’t look like the person I think I look like. We are all dealing with changes in that way, over a certain age. We watch our skin change, and I don’t think that is such an easy thing to do.”

Would she consider more plastic surgery?

“I am tempted every time I look in the mirror,” she says. “You want your familiar face back when you see all the lines around your chin, neck, eyes, mouth, your bloody arms and everything else.”

Fortunately for the Academy Award winning actress her face lift didn’t leave her looking weird and plastic.

I’d sure as hell like the name of her surgeon. He could be giving lessons to more than a few of the aging stars who have undergone plastic surgery hoping to hold off Father Time, only to discover they may be holding off the wrinkles but their faces are now frozen and macabre.

Some love stories just pull at the heart strings. This is the story of Britain’s oldest bride. She’s 94 and her boy toy is a measly 86.

It seems that Winston Barraclough met Bess Atkins in 2005 when Winston, a widower, was volunteering as a bus driver for the local hospital. His bus picked her up from her home and he instantly “took a shine” to Bess, a former civil servant, who had been a widow for 40 years. During that first fateful drive, he actually stopped to buy her a box of chocolates!

But it was only later, when she went searching for him, that romance blossomed. “When he dropped me off on that first meeting. I didn’t even know his name but I tracked him down to a shop in the centre I knew he visited,” Bess said.

“I was a bit nervous when I rang him to ask him around for a coffee - I thought he might think I was a fast woman.”

“But we had a great chemistry and I thought why not?”

Bess said Winston proposed to her in January of this year on New Year’s Day.

“Winston said he had something serious to say,” she said. “I thought it was some medical problem and feared the worst,”

Instead he popped the question - “Will you be my wife please. I would love to marry you.” Bess was shocked but I said “Yes, that would be lovely.”

Bess and Winston exchanged vows April 5 at St Nicholas Church in Hornsea, East Yorkshire, which happens to be the same church in which the new Mrs Barraclough first married almost 70 years ago, ten days before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Bess remarked that “Marrying in the same church was lovely and brought back “a lot of happy memories.”

The Rev. Phillip Lamb, who married them, said: “Love has no boundaries. It’s never too late for anyone and Winston and Bess are living proof of that.”

What did I learn from this lovely little tidbit?

• There’s hope for me yet. I need to start considering a boy toy that doesn’t necessary have the physique of Matthew McConaughey.
• I haven’t had a box of chocolates bought for me for some time. The chocolates the children give me get classified under “obligations to the old lady”, and don’t qualify.
• I need to quit hanging around the local coffee shops and Wal Mart and start prowling the bus stops.
• I’d like to know what hospital hires an 83 year old coot to drive it’s buses?

Some time ago Cassandra Peterson who has made the “Mistess of the Dark” a much loved character, was quoted as saying….”If I retire doing the character, I don’t think the character has to retire. There will still be caricatures of Elvira. You know, Dracula still works, and he’s dead.”

Well it appears that Cassandra Peterson, who created the much loved “Elvira” over 25 years ago, are teaming up with Weakest Link and #American Idol[/tag] producers to pitch a project featuring contestants competing for a one-year contract to portray the character in various personal appearances.

The contestants would be put through elimination challenges designed to parody some of the most popular reality shows but with a macabre twist, with Peterson (in character) serving as a sort of mentor — or “tormentor,” as she puts it — and judges making the final determination on who gets eliminated.

I’m wondering if I can get my hair long enough to sport a beehive hairdo?
