Thanks to the booming divorce market, we now live in an age when more and more 35-and-older women are both single and financially independent. Add image-enhancing prospects created by fitness, diet and plastic surgery, and you have something approximating a new species of woman. And every new species needs a new name, in this case homo cougarus – The Cougar.

This is the Golden Age for mature women and we not just talking on the Hollywood scene. You have Katie Couric presenting the news to the nation every night. Women such as Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton on the political front and fabulous Hollywood ladies such as Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon all have some things in common. Most are highly intelligent, and most are glamorous. These women and the breed of women they represent have their own money, their own power.

Backing up the cougar craze as the buzzpoint of a larger population shift are the statistics cited in the new book Microtrends, which features a chapter on cougars. Among the book’s findings:

U.S Census bureau statistics show that the number of couples in which the woman was significantly older than the man shot up by more than 3 million between 1997 and 2003.

I don’t think I’ve ever met a man you had hardly any common sense. For you young studs out there looking to hook up with a mature older woman for the experience of a lifetime, here’s a few pointers to get your first date with your hot cougarheaded in the right direction:

• Trust me when I say she won’t be interested in the number of women you’ve slept with and  your ability to drink a 24 without falling down
• She won’t want to hear about your sorry love life. Keep the Ex’s out of the conversation.
• Unless your a sumo wrestler, don’t pig out on that first date. Try not to wipe the spaghetti sauce off your face with your sleeve. Keep those eating noises to a minimum please.
• Stay off that damn cell phone. Put it on mute if necessary.
• Check your attire – no holes, stains etc., and if you’re wearing running shoes find some that aren’t riddled with holes.
• For God’s sake use deordorant. You guys tend to take the term “macho” a little too far.
• You’re probably a little awkward and baffled why the hell she picked you, but if you respond to her conversation with one syllable answers, you’re going to find yourself left high and dry. A mature woman expects her man to be interested in her and be able to hold his own in a conversation
• Some things are on a “Need To Know” basis. Try to keep some of those traumatizing experiences in your past to a minimum. This is a “Get To Know You Date”.
• So you’ve had 8 glasses of wine over dinner and you don’t like the way the guy at the next table is looking at you. I know you’d like to stand up and show her just how “Macho” you really are,  but mature women don’t care to post bail on their first dates
• So she’s not what you expected and probably you’re not what she was hoping for either, so please remember to keep your roaming eye focused on your date. I know the chick at the next table is giving you the eye, but a little courtesy and good manners goes a long way.

We think Katie Couric is still one hell of a cougar even though her romance has now fizzled with her boy toy, Brooks Perlin, we salute the lady for knowing how to pick em’.

Screw the ratings when you’ve got a hunky looking triathlete with one of the best pedigrees in the country. So who is Brooks Perlin? The prep school-educated son of a rich Connecticut family, he attended prestigious Williams College.

“The age difference scared her off at first,” said a friend of the CBS Evening News anchor. Rumor had it that Perlin had a roving eye with the ladies. Maybe this is what finally did scare her off.

On the heels of a ruling that struck down California’s laws against gay marriage, Ellen DeGeneres announced her plans to wed longtime girl-toy, Portia de Rossi. Ellen, 50, and her longtime love (since 2004 which can be “longtime” by Hollywood Standards), Portia who’s 35, made the announcement before Ellen’s cheering audience.

The California’s Supreme Court ruled that people have a fundamental “right to marry” the partner of their choosing – therefore the previous ban on gay marriage was ruled unconstitutional.

One key to their happiness, DeGeneres said last year, is that they learn from one another. “She’s taught me lessons about myself, and I feel like I’ve taught her,” said the TV host. “We’ve both changed and grown, and we just feel like, ‘Oh, okay, this is completion.’ ”

Seems to me Ellen had similar things to say about wierd Anne Heche at one time!

There will always be the Traditional Tina, scoping out an older fella who’s “on her maturity level” as she likes to think- and who’s willing to play provider. But what of the ever-growing population of footloose women with their crazy cradle-robbing ways? Is this another Maggie May, who, as Rod Stewart tells it, will “wreck your bed, and in the morning kick you in the head?” Or is she some lonely desperado, hoping to latch on to a kinder, gentler generation of men? Here are some insights as to why some women prefer to date younger guys.

Not every girl wants a father figure. Often, a man who’s older than you assumes a protective and paternal role; and to many women, this is a real turn-off. Why? Well, for starters, we already have a daddy! Not to mention, the woman who holds a high-paying exec job Monday through Friday may have some trouble playing Helpless Heather on the weekends. She’s used to taking care of herself, speaking on her own behalf, and yes, even paying her own way without the help of Daddy Warbucks.

Younger men are often better in bed. Ahh, the cruel irony of life. Remember sex with your college girlfriend? That 21-year-old ‘fraidy cat is now a tigress of temptation. Something funny happens to women as they age. Their testosterone levels increase; oddly enough, around the same time that men’s are plummeting. The hormone surge gives ladies a libido lift, which is why women in their 30s and 40s just want to get busy. Meanwhile, our same-age male counterparts are busy studying the inside of their eyelids. Need I say more?

Younger guys look up to an older, successful woman. Let’s talk about those corporate power babes again. Sometimes, it’s lonely at the top… but not when there’s a starry-eyed cutie-pie smiling up at you! There’s something to be said for having a younger guy who admires you for your accomplishments. It makes you feel great, and the sad fact is, you can’t always get that kind of respect from an older man. Baby Boomers may love Donna Reed, but guys born later can understand and better appreciate women who go after their dreams.

The metrosexual male is our cup of tea. Nothing like having your boy over for some afternoon delight and finding out he borrowed your loofah in the shower. The New Generation of open-minded guys is A-OK in our book! This guy can whip up a Thai stir-fry using organic ingredients, grooms his fingernails and his toenails, is politically-correct to a fault, and won’t eat Starkist if it might harm the baby dolphins. To the 40-something who grew up with Archie Bunker, he’s a breath of fresh air.

Girls just want to have fun. Some of us are downright immature, and we’re not afraid to say it! Perhaps “young at heart” is the better term, but the point is this: some older women really do just want to have fun. Lots of broads who are pushing fifty still rock out at concerts, drive 70 mph with the top down, stay out all night, flip people off when necessary, and generally wreak havoc. That’s not to say we can’t find a man of ANY age to engage in juvenile antics with us… but, well, the younger ones just seem more willing to join in the fun.

Some women are late bloomers. Embarrassing as it may be, plenty of chicks spend the better part of their 20s mired in self-doubt and confusion. Instead of kicking back like they should have, the rainclouds of pessimism hung around to dampen their fun and turn them into neurotic freaks. Ten years later, some of those very same basketcases have mellowed into chill ladies who are just now ready to embrace life to the fullest. If this involves cavorting with young fellas in ways they never thought possible, all the better! Better late than never, right girls?

Guys in their prime are ohhhh, so fine. If you had to choose between a thick, juicy steak and some shriveled up beef jerky, which one would you pick? In the same way that men can’t help looking at supple young girls, we ladies find ourselves drawn to guys under thirty. Younger men have tight bodies, bright eyes, great smiles, and usually a crowd of buddies to keep them laughing and pumped for excitement. What’s the alternative? The balding bachelor with a beer gut who sits home smoking stogies and listening to Springsteen’s Glory Days on repeat mode? No, thanks!

In all seriousness, it shouldn’t matter the age of two people who mutually respect and enjoy each other’s company. We love who we love, not matter what their age or what they look like. If an older woman and a younger man feel comfortable having a relationship, then no one has the right to criticize them. To the lady who simply likes a quick fling with a hot young stallion? Here’s to you, Mrs. Robinson.

It just doesn’t seem fair. Ivana Trump and I are close to the same age. How is it she’s able to land a hot boy toy like Rossano Rubicondi? The best I can do is any guy over 70 who’s had too much to drink normally makes a pass at me. (I think I look like the type that carries a mickey in her purse)

We both have blonde hair and green eyes. She obviously exercises a little more than I do and I’m guessing I’m unlikely to meet Mr. Hot Pants by hanging out at Wal Mart on a Saturday night.

Nevertheless, it pisses me off. Think I’ll make myself feel better by having another piece of that chocolate cake.

When questioned regarding the age difference between he and Demi – “The number is so inconsequential,” he groaned. “I know 40-year-olds who act like they are 10 and I know a lot of 10-year-olds who act like they’re 40. They should change the measure from how long you have been here to how much responsibility you have taken on in your life. “That should be the age barometer. You fill in a docket, send it out to them and they send you back something that says ‘You are actually 50′.”

Ashton say the reason they’ve defied the critics and stayed together is because they have realistic expectations about marriage.

“The biggest problem in general with relationships is guys are raised with a goal of having sex,” he grinned. “But for women, they have these goals of ‘I’m going to get married, then I’m going to have kids’.

“What we’re missing is no one has the goal of being married. They think about the wedding, so no one’s working towards being married as a goal.”

Incredibly, Ashton even claims he didn’t even know the identity of stunning brunette Demi when they first met.

“The first time I ever saw her, I didn’t know who she was,” he smiled. “I sat and talked to her, not having the slightest idea I was talking to a famous person.” Yet when he made his debut red carpet appearance at Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle with Demi and her ex Bruce Willis, this became bigger news than anything he was doing on screen.
